What is Adult Speech Pathology?

Adult speech pathology is a specialised field aimed at diagnosing and treating communication and swallowing disorders in adults. These disorders can arise from various conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, or even as a result of cancer treatments affecting the mouth or throat.

The primary goal of adult speech pathology is to improve and restore a person’s ability to communicate effectively and safely swallow. Speech pathologists assess the individual’s speech, language, cognition, and swallowing abilities to create personalised therapy program.

Our therapists may provide exercises to strengthen oral muscles, improve speech articulation, or offer alternative communication methods like augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices when speech is impaired.

Improved communication skills can enhance social interactions, relationships, and even professional opportunities. Moreover, addressing swallowing difficulties can prevent serious health issues such as malnutrition, dehydration, or aspiration pneumonia, significantly improving the individual’s quality of life.
